London: Cassell & Company Ltd, (1956). First UK edition. Hardcover. A book of three stories. "The Old Beauty', in this posthumously published volume, recalls the life of Gabrielle Longstreet, know the world over as the most beautiful, unconventional and bewitching hostess of Edwardian society. The second story, 'The Best Years' in complete contrast, is set amid the great plains of Nebraska where, in a little isolated village school, a gentle fifteen-year-old girl is the sole, but all-sufficient, teacher. This poignant story of a young girl's devotion to her charges is undoubtedly one of the most moving stories Miss Cather ever wrote. Restrained, lightly drawn, idyllic but unemotional, it touches the heart by its very simplicity. The third story, 'Before Breakfast', is set in a small island off the Nova Scotia coast, the retreat of a man to whom the utter solitude of the island offered a perfect antidote to the pressure of city life, a story to send harassed men searching for islands of refuge. 160pp. A very good plus copy bound in black cloth with gilt spine stamping (tiny bookseller stamp to front pastedown) in an un-clipped dust jacket with sunning at spine.
