IN A NARROW GRAVE. Essays on Texas

Austin: Encino Press, (1968). First edition. No binding. Rare advance long galley proofs of the "skycrapers" edition. This set of the galleys is inscribed by the publisher William Witliff on the first sheet "First page proof / July 22, 1968 / Wm Witliff." Certainly the most scarce McMurtry item. When numerous typographical errors were discovered in the text of this first printing, the most notable, of some 60 corrections, was the word "skycrapers" in place of the intended "skyscrapers", line 13 of page 105. It was with this discovery Witliff decided to scrap the entire edition and print a corrected one. Reportedly only a dozen copies of this printing escaped destruction (noted bookman Peter Howard declared, "...my informal census of copies I have either examined or know of through reliable information locates approximately twenty-two copies of the "skycrapers edition..." Housed in a custom-made cloth box with a plastic see-through top, with spine label. Very good to near fine set. Item #13080

Price: $9,500.00
