'Mating' by Norman Rush won the National Book Award. A first-person narrative by an unnamed American anthropology graduate student in Botswana around 1980. Jane Smiley's 'A Thousand Acres' won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1992, as well as the National Book Critics Circle Award, and was adapted into a 1997 film. The novel is a modernized retelling of Shakespeare's Kind Lear and is set on a thousand acre (four hundred hectares) farm in Iowa that is owned by a family of a father and his three daughters.
