THE SLIGHTLY IRREGULAR FIRE ENGINE or The Hithering Thithering Djinn

New York: Farrar , Straus and Giroux, 1971. Donald Barthelme. First edition. Hardcover. 4to. A children's book illustrated by the author. Winner of the National Book Award for Young People (1972). One morning in 1887, Mathilda went into the back yard and discovered a Chinese house had appeared overnight. While she really would have preferred a red fire engine, the house was very interesting, indeed, so she went in to explore. There she met a knitting pirate who told her his history, a cat seller, a djinn, and other welcoming creatures. Mathilda must leave when her nurse calls her, and is sad when she hears that the house will be leaving that night. The djinn, however, agreeably leaves Mathilda a fine souvenir. Unpaginated, this thin volume is stunningly illustrated in colors. Bound in bright green cloth over boards with black and red spine stamping. A near fine copy in a very good plus clean dust jacket with two faint closed tears, on to the top of the front panel and one to the top of the rear panel. Item #14314
