THE END OF MY LIFE. A Novel. Vance Bourjaily.

New York: Scribner's, 1947. First edition. Hardcover. Author's first book. Inscribed by Bourjaily on the front free endpaper. This novel draws heavily on Bourjaily's experience as a volunteer ambulance driver during the Second World War. Inevitably critics compared it -- mostly favourably -- to Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms. Its matter-of-fact, uninflected acknowledgment of the presence of homosexuals in the armed forces was remarkable for the time, although most critics chose not to remark on it at all even though the book was well reviewed. A very good copy, with some browning around the endpapers due to the glue used in production, in a very good dust jacket with small chips and rubbing to the spinal extremities and jacket flaps. A couple of light stains to foredge. 278 pages. Item #14427
