THE VIRGINIAN. A Horseman of the Plains

Lanham: Roberts Rinehart Publishers, 2002. Thom Roos. First edition thus. Hardcover. This special edition, housed in a black clamshell case and bound in leather and cloth and issued sans jacket, was published on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the first publication of this classic western saga. Illustrated by Thom Roos (including the large artwork to front of clamshell case signed by Roos). First published in 1902 and set in Wyoming Territory during the 1880s. It describes the life of a cowboy on a cattle ranch and is considered the first true fictional western ever written, aside from short stories and pulp dime novels, though modern scholars debate this. With remarkable character depth and vivid descriptive passages, The Virginian stands not only as the first great novel of American Western literature, but as a testament to the eternal struggle between good and evil in humanity, and a revealing study of the forces that guide the combatants on both sides. A fine copy still in shrink wrap in a nearly fine clamshell case. Item #14622
