The husband-and-wife duo Bernd and Hilla Becher – who began to collaborate in 1959 and married in 1961– transformed the aesthetics and content of post-war photography through their clear-eyed examinations of industrial buildings, better known as ‘typologies.’ In this nine-part work titled Fabrikhallen (‘factory buildings’), their precise images of individual facades document these cathedrals of industrial production. Presented in a three-by-three grid, the work encourages its viewers to contemplate the minute differences and similarities of the various building designs. The Bechers’ deadpan presentation nudges us to appreciate the beauty and craft that went into the design of these overlooked – and now largely extinct – structures. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket.
