THE BLACK PANTHERS. Foreword by Bobby Seale (signed by Bobby Seale) Essay by Charles E. Jones

New York: Aperture, (2006). First edition. Hardcover. 4to. This copy signed by Stephen Shames and Bobby Seale. "This book has taken almost forty years to emerge. In 1970, a major American publisher agreed to publish my photographs of the Black Panther Party. That year, my wife Phyllis and I drove cross-country, photographing party chapters along the way in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toledo, Philadelphia, and Boston, finally arriving in New York, ready to meet with my editor and sign the book contract. However, the contract negotiations did not go smoothly; the publisher disputed every detail of the proposed agreement. This carried on for days. Finally, my editor revealed to me that Spiro Agnew, vice president under Richard Nixon, played golf with the chairman of the company. During a recent game Vice President Agnew had told his buddy that the administration did not want these photographs published, and my editor was fired for signing the book. Set on getting the book published, I made the rounds for two years, approaching a number of publishers, but nobody would touch the material--until now. My involvement with the Panthers began while I was a student at the University of California at Berkeley, and actively involved in the anti-Vietnam War movement. The first time I saw Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton was on April 15, 1967, at the Spring Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam, where they were selling copies of Chairman Mao's 'Little Red Book'. Their confident manner awed me. I snapped off a single frame. It is fitting that my first photographs of the Panthers, taken on the fifteenth roll of film I ever shot, was of Bobby Seale and it is also appropriate that my last photographs of the Panthers are of Seale's campaign for Mayor of Oakland, in 1973." Bound in slick pictorial boards. 152 pages with captions, author bios, and acknowledgments. A fine copy, issued without dust jacket. Item #14842
