Item #ESB12529 MONUMENT. A Lithograph. ARTIST PROOF Signed 1963. Joseph Hirsch.

MONUMENT. A Lithograph. ARTIST PROOF Signed 1963.

n.p. Associated American Artists, 1963. Joseph Hirsch. First edition. Lithograph. Image measures approx 14 1/8 X 22 1/2 inches, overall (framed under glass) 31 1/4 x 26 inches. This copy is marked "Artist Proof, '63" and signed by the artist in pencil. There was an edition of 50 signed. Printed by Lucien Detruit, in Paris, on Arches paper. At seventeen, Hirsch was given a four-year scholarship to the Pennysylvania Museum School of Industrial Art by the city of Philadelphia winning awards in drawing and illustration, and he also studied with George Luks in New York. From Luks he developed a strong feeling for social realism and commentary. Hirsch's images are strong, uncluttered, and deal with living realities in urban situations, showing the tender and touch moments of the ordinary man in a compassionate and realistic manner. Hirsch's drawing of Willy Loman, slouched with face unseen, carrying his salesman's suitcases, used on the dust jacket of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman (as well as the poster for the play), is a classic image that powerfully depicts much about humanity. It has been said that this image "Monument" is an image worthy to commemorate heroes from 9/11, as it shows a man on his hands and knees, shoeless, covered in dirt and soot, stunned but undaunted.
